Roof Leaks? Prepare Them Yourself With These Methods

Roof Leaks? Prepare Them Yourself With These Methods

Roof repairs can be quite daunting and should generally be left to experts. However, if you feel you are handy when it comes to fixing up the house, we have some leak repair advice for you.

1. Fix the Shingles

The first thing you need to do is check if you can see where the leak is coming from. It may not be directly above where you see the water damage and you may need to do some investigation. Check the roof for shingles that are curling or buckling as that could be an indication of where the leak began. To fix it, straighten out the shingle and re-attach them with asphalt roof cement. When working with the shingles and some of them fall apart or just come lose, consider replacing those shingles.

2. Shakes That are Damaged

When you see damaged shakes, split them by using a hammer and a chisel. Use the chisel to lift the shakes and remove the pieces. Try and remove any nails by cutting off the ends, but avoid damaging the good shakes. Cut a new shake that is a bit smaller than the original one and nail it in place with roofing nails.

3. Repairing Connections

Connection points are often the areas where leaks start because the sealant has become loose or worn out. To start off with, inspect all areas where roof surfaces connect, for example, the chimney or vent pipe. Check for damage to caulking and apply new caulk where necessary.

4. Roll Roofing

When the roofing material seems damaged, inspect it for cracks or blisters. Cut the blister open without damaging the underlying roofing material. Remove the water by soaking it up or squeezing it out. Once the area is dry, apply roofing cement under the loose roofing material and press it down. Use nails to close the edges of the blisters and then cover everything with another layer of roofing cement.

Now you have four methods to use to identify and repair leaks in your home. If you realise at any point that the damage is too big for you to repair, do not hesitate to call your local roofing contractor.

5 Safety Tips for Working on the Roof

5 Safety Tips for Working on the Roof

Working on the roof is always dangerous. It is always a better idea to call in your local roofing contractor, but if you cannot go that route, take precautions to be safe. Roof safety is extremely important as there are so many things that can go wrong. Follow these safety tips to ensure that you don’t get hurt during your roof repairs or roof cleaning.

Wear the right clothes and shoes

Avoid wearing very loose clothing that can get stuck on things or can give the wind a chance to blow you off your feet. Also, wear shoes that have rubber soles and a good tread. You don’t want to slip, so avoid wearing your favourite worn-out boots.

Keep the roof clean

If cleaning is not your purpose for being on the roof, make sure that it is clean. If the roof is clean, it will be easier to see nails that could cause injury or loose shingles that you can slip on. If you are on the roof to clean it, be very careful where you step and try to avoid tripping and sliding.

Wear a harness

A harness isn’t always necessary, but if you have a very steep roof or the house is several storeys high, wear a harness for added safety. On a normal height and angle roof, it is not that serious. However, in the case of steep or high buildings, your harness could save your life.

Use a gutter guard

A gutter guard can be made of any scrap piece of wood. You fasten it to the roof deck to protect the gutters and also to secure the ladder. You should also consider putting something at the foot of the ladder to stop it from sliding.

Add temporary toe holds

Toe holds are a good idea if you are going to be walking across the roof a lot. You can nail temporary toe holds to the roof and remove them once the job is done. They offer better grip and will also prevent slipping.

Obviously, you should avoid going onto a wet or watery roof. The chances are, you will definitely slip and get injured or damage the roof. These tips should help keep you safe on the roof. Always be careful.
